AASF Golf Tournament

Monday, June 8, 2026

Thank you for joining us on Monday, June 8, for the 25th Annual Adopt-A-Student Foundation Golf Tournament!

Good evening everyone. My name is Lidesni, and I am a rising senior. As I look toward the future, I hope to pursue a career as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, combining my passion for healthcare with my desire to help people through some of the most important moments of their lives.

It is somewhat ironic that I am standing before all of you today because, for much of my life, anxiety made even simple situations feel overwhelming. Speaking in front of a room full of people would have once been one of my greatest fears. Yet in many ways, anxiety is also what taught me courage. It forced me to face challenges I would have rather avoided and showed me that confidence is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to move forward despite it.

Every time I advanced to a new level in swim lessons, I would sob. While other kids celebrated moving up, I dreaded it. A new instructor, a different group of swimmers, unfamiliar expectations, everything that came with change felt overwhelming. I remember gripping my mothers hand, tears running down my face, wishing I could stay exactly where I was. Looking back, it was never really about swimming. It was about the fear of leaving behind what was comfortable.

For most of my life, change felt like something to survive rather than embrace. My anxiety made every transition feel larger than it actually was. My mind would race through every possible outcome, and my hands would shake before even stepping into unfamiliar situations as simple as a casual conversation with a friend. I’ve always craved certainty. I wanted guarantees. Most of all, I wanted things to always stay the same. That fear followed me into one of the biggest transitions of my life to date: high school.

The summer before my seventh grade year, going to a high school, I spent more time worrying than preparing. The thought of a smaller school, new people, and greater expectations filled me with dread. On my first day, walking through those doors felt impossible. I felt small in a building that seemed enormous. I questioned whether I would fit in, whether I would find my place, and whether I was capable of handling what lay ahead. At that time, I viewed high school as something I had to get through. What I did not realize was that it would become the place that transformed me. The opportunities I pursued, the activities I became involved in, and the people I met slowly pushed me beyond the limits I had placed on myself. I learned to take chances even when I was afraid. I discovered strengths I did not know I possessed. Most importantly, I began to understand that growth rarely happens inside the boundaries of comfort.

As I grew alongside this school, I also watched the school uplift so many others. I saw classmates overcome challenges that seemed impossible and continue moving forward despite obstacles that could have easily defined them. One classmate who experienced homelessness received the support and guidance needed to earn a full scholarship to college. Another balanced the responsibility of caring for two sick parents while still finding the determination to walk across the stage. I watched classmates battle significant mental health challenges and persevere, with one graduating in the top five of their class and preparing to attend an HBCU. Time and time again, I witnessed stories of resilience, perseverance, and strength.

These experiences taught me that success is not measured solely by grades, awards, or accomplishments. It is measured by the courage to keep going when life becomes difficult. It is measured by the willingness to ask for help, to support one another, and to believe that circumstances do not determine a person’s future. Our school has never simply been a place where students attend classes. It has been a community that sees potential in people, especially when they struggle to see it in themselves.

Looking back, I realize that the same community that helped my classmates overcome their challenges also helped me overcome my fear of change. Every opportunity I took, every risk I accepted, and every achievement I am proud of today was made possible by people who encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and trust in my own abilities.

Given this, I want to thank each and every one of you, our teachers, counselors, staff, families, and community members for your continued support, encouragement, and belief in us. You have celebrated our successes, guided us through our setbacks, and reminded us of our potential even when we doubted ourselves. The impact you have made extends far beyond academics; you have helped shape the people we are today and the people we will become in the future. For that, we are deeply grateful.

Each spring, the Adopt-A-Student Foundation (AASF) hosts a Golf Tournament at Salem Country Club in support of Cathedral’s mission. Thanks to the generosity of participants and sponsors, this event raises critical funds that open doors of opportunity for Cathedral scholars who otherwise may not have access to a rigorous, holistic education.
